Tournament Rules
We use the Experimental Ruleset for Smash Ultimate Singles.
1.) General Rules
1a) Set Length
- All sets before top 3 (Winners Finals, Losers Finals, and Grand Finals) will be best of 3 (BO3).
- All sets during top 3 (Winners Finals, Losers Finals, and Grand Finals) will be best of 5 (BO5).
- In the case of Grand Finals resetting, the consequent set will also be BO5.
1b) Sudden Death
- If a game goes to Sudden Death, the winner is determined by stocks and percentage at the time the game ends. If both players are tied in stocks, the player with the lower percentage is the winner. In the event of a percentage tie, or a game in which both players lose their last stock simultaneously, a 1-stock tiebreaker will be played with a 3-minute time limit. The results of an in-game 300% Sudden Death do not count. If Sudden Death occurs in a Sudden Death game, this process is repeated.
1c) Lag Procedure
- Unplayable lag will result in a disqualification (DQ) at the discretion of the tournament organizer (T.O.) that conducts the lag test.
- Lag tests are performed by the T.O. playing against each player individually in a controlled environment (that is, the other player will temporarily leave the arena).
- LAN (or any wired connection) is not required. However, it is highly recommended if it is possible.
1d) Force Majeure Clause
- When a disconnect (DC) occurs, the player responsible for the DC (i.e. whoever is sent to the home menu) will be given a loss for that match. The player is responsible for returning to the arena within a reasonable amount of time, failure to do so will result in a DQ.
1e) DQ Timers
- There is a 7-minute DQ timer on start.gg once both players enter a round (including when the tournament first begins during round 1). Failure to check in during this timeframe will result in a DQ.
- Once both players have checked in to their set, there is another 15-minute DQ timer if inactivity is detected. Failure to act after the timer runs out will result in a DQ.
2.) Stage Rules

2b) Stage Selection Procedure
- Winner of the previous game will ban 3 stages in a BO3, and 2 stages in a BO5.
- Players are not allowed to counterpick to any stage they have previously won on.
2c) Omega and Battlefield Form Clause
- When choosing an Omega or Battlefield form of a stage, only the Omega or Battlefield forms of previously mentioned legal stages may be chosen.
2d) Stage Agreement (or Gentleman's) Clause
- Players may skip the striking process by both agreeing to play on any previously mentioned legal stage or a Gentleman's Only stage.
2e) Gentleman's Only Stage List
The following stages may only be chosen if both players agree to play on them.
- Dream Land
- Fountain of Dreams
- Pokémon Stadium

3.) Character Clauses
3a) Mii Fighter Clause
- All Mii Fighter combinations are legal. Before starting the match, the player using the Mii Fighter must inform the other player of the move set used. A commonly used format is XXXX (ex: 1234).
- If the other player does not understand, the player using the Mii Fighter is obligated to explain which moves they are using.
- When switching to another Mii Fighter (regardless if the Miis look identical or not), the player is again obligated to share the move set.
- Any move sets the player using the Mii Fighter may want to use must be created before the tournament.
3b) Character Legality
- Clefairy is banned and not allowed in tournaments.
- Steve is legal and allowed in tournaments.
3c) Steve Clause
- When counterpicking a stage and one or both players are using Steve, the only Omega form of a stage (other than Final Destination itself) that is legal is Omega form Wuhu Island. (cf. 2c, this clause takes priority)
